A Beautiful Mind

If you haven't seen this movie, you should. This is based (somewhat) on the life of John Nash. Nash is a mathematical genius and is a Nobel Prize winner. The movie shows the way Schizophrenia can take over "a beautiful mind." It stars Russell Crowe (Gladiator) as John Nash. There is a scene where he traces the stars while on a date that makes me just fall in love with him. Maybe thats one of the reasons I think its really romantic for a guy to know constilations and junk like that.

I bought this movie the other week out of a discount bin. When yall come up to see me you can check it out!

Parking Tickets

I have successfully gotten TWO parking tickets so far this year from the CMUPD. The first, wish was waved, was for parkin gin the wrong lot. But the second, which was even less my fault, was not waved. I lost the sheet telling me what time i had to move my car before games and I asked my room mate. She tol dme Thurday after 4pm. I moved it at about 7pm and parked it in the Sweeney lot. The next morning i find a ticket in the windshield wipers. It turns out that last game we were supposed to move the cars on Thurday, this game we weren't supposed to move them until Friday. Thats$25 down the drain, oh well.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

By: The Flaming Lips

Her name is Yoshimi
she's a black belt in karate
working for the city
she has to discipline her body
'Cause she knows that
it's demanding
to defeat those evil machines
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots defeat me
Those evil-natured robots
they're programmed to destroy us
she's gotta be strong to fight them
so she's taking lots of vitamins
'Cause she knows that
it'd be tragic
if those evil robots win
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots defeat me
Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi'Cause she knows thatit'd be tragic
if those evil robots win
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots defeat me
Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots defeat me
Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots eat me

The Origin of Love

In the Symposium (translated as "drinking party" although it was decided not to drink at this one) the eulogies were given for Love. In one a man described the origin of love. Rufus Wainwright wrote a song about this Greek myth.
"Origin Of Love"
Rufus Wainwright

When the earth was still flat/And the clouds made of fire/And mountains stretched up to the sky/Sometimes higher/Folks roamed the earthLike big rolling kegs./They had two sets of arms./They had two sets of legs./They had two faces peering/Out of one giant head/So they could watch all around them/As they talked; while they read./And they never knew nothing of love./It was before the origin of love./The origin of love/And there were three sexes then/One that looked like two men/Glued up back to back/Called the children of the sun./And similar in shape and girth/Were the children of the earth./They looked like two girls Rolled up in one./And the children of the moon/Were like a fork shoved on a spoon./They were part sun,/part earth Part daughter, part son./The origin of love/Now the gods grew quite scared Of our strength and defiance/And Thor said,"I'm gonna kill them all/With my hammer/Like I killed the giants."/And Zeus said, "No/You better let me/Use my lightening, like scissors,/Like I cut the legs off the whales/And dinosaurs into lizards./"Then he grabbed up some bolts/And he let out a laugh/Said, "I'll split them right down the middle./Gonna cut them right up in half."/And then storm clouds gathered above/Into great balls of fire/And then fire shot down/From the sky in bolts/Like shining blades/Of a knife./And it ripped/Right through the flesh/Of the children of the sun/And the moon/And the earth./And some Indian god/Sewed the wound up into a hole,/Pulled it round to our belly/To remind us of the price we pay./And Osiris and the gods of the Nile/Gathered up a big storm/To blow a hurricane,/To scatter us away,/In a flood of wind and rain,/And a sea of tidal waves,/To wash us all away,/And if we don't behave/They'll cut us down again/And we'll be hopping round on one foot/And looking through one eye./Last time I saw you/We had just split in two./You were looking at me./I was looking at you./You had a way so familiar,/But I could not recognize,/Cause you had blood on your face;/I had blood in my eyes./But I could swear by your expression/That the pain down in your soul/Was the same as the one down in mine./That's the pain,/Cuts a straight line/Down through the heart;/We called it love./So we wrapped our arms around each other,/Trying to shove ourselves back together./We were making love,/Making love./It was a cold dark evening,/Such a long time ago,/When by the mighty hand of Jove,/It was the sad story/How we became/Lonely two-legged creatures,/It's the story ofThe origin of love./That's the origin of love.
So tell me what you think of story/myth/song. I don't want to know if you belive it or not and why or why not... Tell me parts of the song that are interesting. Tell me something interesting you find about the song. Do you have any insight into where the song might have come from? Do you see any similarities between this view of the creation of man and the christian view?

The Art of Living

In HST we are reading Epictetus' The Art of Living. It is basically a self-help book from the Roman Empire. It is full of short pieces of advice. Here are some the the headings:
Know What You Can Control and What You Can't
Accept Events As They Come
Approach Life As a Banquet
Everything Happens For a Good Reason
Self Mastery Depends on Self-Honesty
Avoid Casual Sex (hehe)
Take Care of Your Body
Good Is Good

Ryyan

We have greeters at lunch who swipe our card. On Tuesdays and Thursday we always have the same greeter. His name is Ryan. (no, the title is not a typo, I was inspired by Rachael's security word on UsNow) Every Tuesday and Thursday Jennifer and I walk downstairs in girlish excietment, knowing that he will be there to greet us. We walk in and he takes our card, not looking at it. He looks into our eyes with a sort of squint, "What's it start with?" "J" I answer. "Jessica?" "Jennifer." And he swipes the card and hands it to me, "Next time." Jennifer hands him her card. "What's it start with?" A glance between us and two half smiles, "J." "Jessica?" "no, Jennifer." "Next time for sure." And we move along our way for lunch. This went on for a couple weeks. But, Today he got it. He said it like we had been freinds for years. Isn't it nice to have people that can brighten up your day? People that you can look forward to seeing? He does the same rutine for everyone, so I shouldn't feel special. But, really I do, he makes everyone feel special.

Oh well, I suppose as long as i keep up posting no one else will have to. I know that when Kenric get's his blog up and running his will be great. What do you guys think of the look of my blog? What about the black and white images?

Rufus in Lansing

Today I read on the official Rufus Wainwright Website that he is coming to East Lansing on Saturday, October 8th. He will be doing a solo show at the Worton Center. Tickets are $20. I know that Sarah won't want to come, but would anyone else? I think my mom might buy me tickets for my birthday. If not I will just have to pay for it myself. I am NOT missing out on an opportunity like this. I've seen live performances on his website and he is great live. The show should be amazing, at least to me. Even if your couldn't care less about Rufus, be happy for me.

Fraggle Rock

Does anyone remember the great children's television show Fraggle Rock? It first aired in 1983, ending production in 1987. The show followed the adventures of these underground creatures.
Check out this site to recindle your memories of Fraggle Rock.

I loved this TV show. There was great music! Anything done by Jim Henson is bound to be great, right? The DVD of the first season is available now. Wouldn't that be great to see?

Studying

Studying is probably the most annoying and most necessary thing to do at college. Right now I should be studying and taking an online quiz for my teaching class, but I'm not. I need to study for my GEO exam coming up over Europe, but I'm not. I should be reading my work for my HTS class, but yet again, I'm not. And I'm actually one of the lucky ones, most people have more studying than i have. Good grief Charlie Brown. How are you all doing with studying?

The Miracle of Life

Yesterday in HEV100 (Human Growth and Development) we watched an acadamy award winning documentary about the development of a child from conception to birth. As Phame kept bringing up, I wonder how they get those images from inside... but yet I really don't want to know. At one month old a child has basically all of the systems it will have when he is grown. Seeing the growing baby really made me even more solid in my beliefs about abortion. The egg starts to develop before it even attaches to the wall of the uterus. And contraception such as birth control and the morning after pill prevent this attaching thereby killing the already developing child.

Isn't the black and white great?

Due to Popular Demand...

Not really POPULAR demand.. but demand from Sarah at least. Since it appears that I am the only one with any spare time to check the blogs I decided that I should have my own. It's sort of a "me" thing to do anyways, having a blog that is. Here I will post Things that i find are cool, information about my life, and whatever else i deem worthy to be post.
